I am Alphonce M Nyalali, a PhD student at the School of International Education, Shandong First Medical University. I recently attended two events organized by the European Association of Neuro-Oncology (EANO), which took place in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom, from October 16th to 20th, 2024. The first event was a kick-off event of the EANO School of Neuro-Oncology program on October 16th, 2024. The second event was the 19th Conference of the European Association of Neuro-Oncology (October 17th to 20th, 2024). The kick-off event and the 19th EANO Conference were held at the Scottish Event Campus in Glasgow.

EANO is Europe’s multidisciplinary Neuro-Oncology organization representing all medical and scientific disciplines involved in preventing, diagnosing, and treating tumors of the central nervous system (CNS). The EANO School of Neuro-Oncology is a comprehensive high-level, postgraduate, in-depth 2-year virtual (online) training programme in neuro-oncology. It aims to provide advanced education on all aspects of the discipline, including basic science, epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of all neuro-oncology conditions for adults and children, as well as supportive care for survivors and end-of-life care and research to healthcare professionals and basic scientists planning a career in the field.
The current batch comprises 24 participants: 21 from Europe, and one from Asia (Philippines), South America (Brazil), and Africa (Tanzania). These participants were selected among 75 applicants on a competitive basis. They are from the fields of neurology, medical oncology, neurosurgery, radiation oncology, neuroradiology, neuropathology, specialized nursing and allied health professionals, and basic/translational scientists working in neuro-oncology or related fields.
The kick-off event was truly exciting, featuring a keynote speech by Dr. Susan Short, President of EANO, followed by participant introductions and a series of exceptional lectures from a diverse group of experts. These speakers covered a range of topics, including epidemiology, radiotherapy, neuropathology, neurosurgery, and nursing, and represented various countries across Europe. Another highlight of the day was a moving talk by a brain tumor survivor, who is also a medical specialist. This session provided me and my fellow participants with invaluable insights into comprehensive patient care. The day concluded with a dinner hosted by the EANO-SNO committee, offering an opportunity for participants to reconnect, familiarize themselves with one another, and engage in meaningful professional exchanges.
The 19th Conference of the European Association of Neuro-Oncology (EANO), held from October 17 to 20, 2024, was an engaging and comprehensive four-day event. The conference kicked off with an Education Day on Thursday, October 17, followed by a welcoming ceremony in the evening. In general, the meeting covered a broad range of topics, including advanced therapies, quality of life, artificial intelligence, and data sharing. The event fostered collaboration across various disciplines, including neuro-oncology, neurosurgery, neuropathology, neuroradiology, radiation oncology, and allied health fields. Experts from around the world presented the latest findings in clinical trials, as well as breakthroughs in basic, translational, and clinical science.
In addition to the scientific sessions, the conference featured career-enhancing programs like the Career Boost Initiative, Youngsters Networking, and the EANO Evening, which provided valuable opportunities for personal and professional growth. These activities made my participation in the event an inspiring and rewarding experience.
